Naps
Are there certain parts of the day that are more challenging for your baby to sleep? Sometimes you miss your baby’s sleepy cues and wait too long to put them down for a nap. Other times you might put Baby down for a nap only to have them wake up after 20 minutes. It’s completely normal for naps to last anywhere from 20 minutes to 3+ hours. Some babies are very consistent with naps while others vary quite a bit day to day.
Sleep anticipations
Naps are essential
Naps are essential to help babies recharge, and also allow their brains to store information. If the inconsistent naps leave you feeling frustrated, remember that daytime sleep is different from nighttime sleep, and if there are things you want to do, it’s ok to let your baby nap while you’re driving. Another option is putting Baby in their stroller for a nice long walk. If Baby is sleepy, a walk will often help them relax enough to fall asleep.
Keep nighttime consistent
Regardless of what their daytime naps look like, try to be consistent at night with an early bedtime routine and bedtime. Research shows that babies and young toddlers need an early bedtime around 7-7:30 p.m. If your baby had short or non-existent naps, consider pushing bedtime back by at least an hour to give your baby a bit more time for nighttime sleep.
